Glen Ellyn History

In the beginning, Glen Ellyn was known as a resort town with Lake Ellyn's waters thought to have "therapeutic" effects. Visitors flocked to the town and it became regarded as the prominent link on a major stage coach route between Galena, Rockford, and Chicago. Activity and growth furthered when the Railroad came through and Glen Ellyn evolved into a "bedroom" community for those working in the city. The Village has continued to draw families looking for a distinctive way of life. It is a place where time slows down, neighbor knows neighbor, and residents work together to preserve the past, support the schools, parks and library, and improve the community.

Lake Ellyn

Lake Ellyn, the Village's focal point, is host to many community celebrations including the Fourth of July festivities, cardboard boat regatta, fine arts festival, and concerts. Outdoor enthusiasts of all ages enjoy Lake Ellyn Park year round.

In the winter, the ice skaters provide a charming scene reminiscent of a Norman Rockwell painting with picturesque Glenbard West High School as a backdrop.
